I LOVE networking and helping out my peers, and as such I’m often asked about *breaking into industries,* specifically relating to user experience and/or higher education. As it happens, there are two opportunities coming up that meet both requirements, and I’m super excited for both.
The first is the an opening in higher ed for a Portal Administrator in ITS (apply up to July 6, 2015). Essentially, the Web Presence Manager (me) oversees the public-facing website while this position works on in the intranet (SharePoint experience required). Obviously, there will be a lot of contact between myself and this position as we sort through the kinds of information which should be publicly displayed, and what should be accessed in the portal. As we move toward increasingly customized views and information that relates specifically to the user in the portal, this position will lead the charge on that movement. So it’s a pretty cool thing to have on your resume, plus it’s a good way to step in to the processes and intricacies of higher education.
The other thing is UX-related, and it’s UXPA MN’s annual summer social at The Happy Gnome in St. Paul (July 9, 2015). It’s totally free for everyone, so it’s a great way to meet the community and score some food and knowledge to help drill down into user experience as a career. There’s something to engage anyone at any point in their career, like portfolio reviews, table discussions, and, of course, general networking in the bar area. It’s sponsored by Digital People, who are super great contractors with tons of contacts and placements in different industries…so it’s another way to try out different types of organizations to find out which one is your best fit.
Obviously there is LOT more happening in the next few weeks, so let me know what I’m missing in the comments.
