Last Thursday, I spoke to a crowd of over 60 user experience (and ux-related members of UxPA-MN) on my experience managing the online new student orientation at Metro State (I wrote about it earlier in this post). It was nuts in the best possible way. I was all jacked up on Sudafed and Mucinex and doing my best not to let my nose drip on the microphone. Fresh off my first public speaking engagement for a professional group (not counting work-related things), I scored another with Pathways to Success: Serving Non-Traditional Students in Higher Education. It’s a conference at Metropolitan State on April 17.
I’ll be using the same basis for my presentation, repurposed as The Road to Redesign: Meeting the Needs of Nontraditional Students via Online New Student Orientation, but I’ll have to do some major restructuring to turn it into a presentation for academic advisors and not for user experience experts. This presentation will guide attendees through the redesign of Metropolitan State’s online new student orientation using information gathered from surveys, shadowing, and usability testing. This session will share strategies for conducting practical user research to improve a website’s user experience with the goal of meeting the needs of nontraditional students.
I think I’ll focus heavily on the usability testing portion of it, and different methods for conducting usability testing, and turn that into the focus of the presentation, which means moving the end to the front and a lot of other reconfiguration, but I think it’ll be fun to revamp it in this way.
On top of both of these presentations–both geared for around 60 minutes–I also have a proposal pending for the MnSCU IT Conference, but for some reason I applied for just a posterboard session, meaning, basically, a TED talk kind of thing. Super short. How can I knock this thing down to 3 minutes?
